The Gaumukh Tapovan Trek is a perfect blend of adventure and spirituality, set beneath the majestic Mt. Shivling. Starting from the sacred town of Gangotri in Uttarakhand, this 46 km trek reaches an altitude of 14,160 ft at Tapovan.

The trail passes through beautiful coniferous forests and rugged Himalayan terrain, leading to Gaumukh, the holy source of the Bhagirathi River. Trekkers are rewarded with stunning views of peaks like Shivling, Bhagirathi, Meru, and Sudarshan. The serene Mauni Baba Ashram at Tapovan adds a unique spiritual touch, making this trek a truly unforgettable Himalayan experience.

Itinerary

Drive (approx. 240-250 km, 9-10 hrs) from the plains to Gangotri, the base camp.

Check into hotel, rest, and acclimatize.

Start trekking (9-10 km) through pine forests, following the Bhagirathi River.

Overnight stay at Chirbasa.

A shorter trek (5 km) through meadows with views of Bhagirathi peaks.

Set up camp at Bhojbasa by the river.

The most challenging day: trek to Gaumukh (source of Ganga), then a steep ascent to Tapovan.

Explore Tapovan, a high-altitude meadow with views of Mt. Shivling.

Descend from Tapovan back to Bhojbasa (approx. 6-7 km).

Rest and enjoy the riverside camping.

Trek back (14 km) along the river to Gangotri.

Drive back to the plains, concluding the trek.

Often included as a buffer for weather delays or for exploring Gangotri.
